We are looking for highly motivated candidates to join the newly established Collaborative Research Centre “Carbon Sequestration at Å resolution (CONCENTRATE)”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This CRC combines the expertise of the University of Greifswald, the University of Bremen, the Max-Planck-Institute for Marine Microbiology Bremen, the Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and Interfaces Potsdam, the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research and the Technical University of Berlin.

The aim of CONCENTRATE is to decipher the molecular and microbial processes that lead to the stabilization of glycans in the ocean. In an interdisciplinary approach, the research team combines laboratory experiments with measurements in natural marine habitats. The focus is on the interactions between algae, bacteria, fungi, their glycans and proteins - down to atomic resolution. The elucidation of these microbial and biochemical mechanisms will contribute to a better understanding of carbon fluxes in the oceans.

You will work on subproject A2 – FUN “Fungi impact glycan sequestration via interactions with bacteria and diatoms”, which investigates the hypothesis that interactions between saprotrophic fungi (yeasts and filamentous fungi) and bacteria influence glycan utilization within the microbial loop, and contribute to the aggregation and sinking of organic matter. To address this, you will examine the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying fungal activity during glycan metabolism, both in the presence and absence of interaction partners. You will be part of Dr. Marlis Reich’s Molecular Ecology working group, which applies physiological, molecular, and imaging techniques to elucidate the functional role of marine fungi within the marine carbon cycle and the marine food web.

  • Cultivation of fungal and bacterial isolates, including co-cultivation experiments
  • Investigation of isolate- and glycan-specific growth kinetics (e.g. well plate assays and cell counts using flow cytometry)
  • Identification of molecular regulation of fungal activity (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics)
  • Analysis of molecular mechanisms underlying glycan binding to the fungal cell wall (using proteomics and fluorescence microscopy with labelled glycans (FLA-PS))
  • Acquisition, analysis and presentation of scientific data
  • Scientific publishing

Voraussetzungen

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master&apos
  • s/University Diploma) in Microbiology, Marine Biology, Molecular Biology or a related field.
  • Applicants who are in the final phase of their Master&apos
  • s degree will also be considered. Please note that submission of the Master&apos
  • s degree certificate is mandatory for employment.
  • Experience in practical molecular work, including nucleic acid extraction (DNA and RNA) and PCR (e.g. marker genes)
  • Experience in the cultivation of microorganisms (fungi and/or bacteria)
  • Basic knowledge of bioinformatics using command-line tools or programs
  • Experience with (multivariate) statistical analysis using R or similar command-based software
  • Basic knowledge of microscopy techniques, including cell fixation and cell counting is a desirable requirement
  • Experience with flow cytometry is a desirable requirement
  • Basic understanding of marine ecosystems
  • Fluency in English

  • Great basic research interest in marine microbiology and molecular ecology
  • High motivation and ability to work actively in an interdisciplinary research and education environment
